About the project

Most clinical researchers choose to run their research studies in-person to better ensure that they gather strong, qualitative data. Requiring an in-person attendance leads to inconvenience, inaccessibility, and overall less participation.

What would it mean to bridge the gap between the rigidity of clinical research with the convenience of our smartphones?

Smart Omix is a web application where clinical researchers configured and launched their own research studies. We required a mobile platform where users could enroll as participants and contribute their data. The ideal mobile platform would allow participants to easily contribute data while still providing flexibility and trust to its users.

I conducted a round of user interviews with 7 participants who had taken part in at least one research study conducted by our clinical team. My goal was to better understand the primary user archetypes that engaged in research studies. I determined two main user archetypes based on my user interviews.

Smart Omix's core experience would need to work around the various life events that might come up for a user. I explored various ways to help users work around the various life events that might arise during their study participation. I ended up adjusting and incorporating certain elements into final designs.

Many participants in research studies are often afflicted with certain diagnoses that may affect their day to day. Offering a communication system to users during extraneous circumstances will reduce user drop-off and allow for better participant management on the researcher's side.

The first version of Smart Omix began production toward the end of my tenure at doc.ai. During this time, Smart Omix was already seeing strong market validation, closing 20+ business contracts with various research institutions by using my designs as sales and marketing collateral.

I continued to collaborate with our product, clinical, and engineering teams to construct a product roadmap and design pipeline. Features and ideas that were deemed out of scope for this release were scheduled into future updates. I also planned methods to measure success after launch: Along with conducting rounds of usability testing and utilizing analytics tools, I could identify any key areas that required iteration by tracking CSAT, active users, and conversion/retention.
